Chapter Twenty-Five

Rain paused outside Fay’s door before knocking. The sound of hurried movement came from inside, followed by a muffled curse. Rain frowned, her hand still raised to knock again.

The door opened abruptly, revealing Fay in an oversized t-shirt and leggings, her hair tied back in a messy bun.

‘Rain?’ she said, surprise evident in her voice. ‘What are you doing here?’

Rain smiled, trying to peer past her sister into the small room. ‘Thought I’d surprise you. Can I come in?’

Fay hesitated for a split second, her eyes darting back into the room. ‘Uh, yeah, sure. Just ... give me a sec.’ She disappeared inside, leaving the door ajar.

Rain heard more shuffling and the sound of a drawer being hastily closed. Her curiosity piqued, she stepped into the bedsit. The smell of instant noodles and stale air hit her immediately. Clothes were strewn everywhere – hanging off the single chair, draped over the radiator, spilling out of an overflowing laundry basket. The tiny window looked like it hadn’t been cleaned since the building was built, casting a grimy light over the cramped space. Empty energy drink cans formed a small army on the desk, and the bedsheets were twisted like Fay had been wrestling with them.

‘I know the place is a bit of a tip.’

Rain laughed, picking up a sock from what she hoped was the clean pile. ‘A bit? Fay, you were messy as a kid so it’s no surprise you still are.’

Fay gave up her pretence of tidying and flopped down on the bed, springs creaking in protest. ‘Yeah, well, not all of us can live in fancy flats with actual separate rooms. So, what do I owe the honour?’

‘I actually came to take you out to lunch. My treat.’

Fay’s eyebrows shot up. ‘Lunch. What’s the occasion?’

‘Can’t I just treat you,’ Rain said, still trying to see what Fay was hiding.

‘Well yeah. Where you thinking?’

‘There’s a new Italian place I’ve been wanting to try.’

Fay glanced at the chest of drawers again, then back at Rain. ‘Okay, let me get changed.’

As Fay rummaged through her wardrobe, Rain’s eyes were drawn to the partially open drawer. She caught a glimpse of something shiny – was that a Rolex watch?

‘So,’ Rain said casually, ‘anything new with you?’

Fay’s head snapped up. ‘New? No, nothing new. Same old, same old. You know how it is.’ She laughed, but it sounded forced.

Rain decided not to push it. Whatever Fay was hiding, she clearly wasn’t ready to share. ‘Right. Well, I’ll wait outside while you change.’

Twenty minutes later, they were seated at a table in Bella Notte, an Italian restaurant with checkered tablecloths and the mouth-watering aroma of garlic and herbs in the air.

After they ordered, Fay leaned forward, a hint of curiosity in her eyes. ‘So, what’s happening with Lauren?’

Rain felt a pang in her chest at the mention of Lauren’s name. She sighed. ‘It’s over. At least, as far as I’m concerned.’

Fay’s eyebrows shot up. ‘Really? Already? What happened?’

Rain fiddled with her napkin. Her sister’s expensive perfume wafted across the table.
